Why couldn't human beings survive on anaerobic respiration alone?

    The problem with anaerobic respiration is that it only secures about 5% of the energy that breathing does, and produces byproducts like carbon dioxide and lactic acid as waste. Carbon dioxide isn't so bad, but lactic acid is toxic and is difficult for your body to get rid of.
