Why do different DNA fragments travel different distances?

    Because they move at different speed. If so, DNA moves at different speeds based on their size. The gel is basically made up of sieves that DNA passes through. Smaller fragments pass through more easily and therefore travel further. Large fragments have a harder time passing through the gel and travel less.
