Matter and energy are required by all living organisms to carry out essential life processes. The living things use any non - living matter as a nutrient for e. g carbon, nitrogen etc. If this matter is not recycled then life on Earth would be impossible. Matter is necessary for the life of any organisms. This is the reason that nature has the phenomenon of recycling the essential nutrients in an ecosystem.
