A jet aircraft is traveling at 296 m/s in horizontal flight. The engine takes in air at a rate of 103 kg/s and burns fuel at a rate of 3.86 kg/s. The exhaust gases are ejected at 757 m/s relative to the aircraft. Find the thrust of the jet engine. Answer in units of N

    Explanation:

    Using Newton second law of motion

    Force * time = change in momentum

    Force = change in momentum / time = m₁Δv + m₂v₁

    where m₁ = 103 kg/s, m₂ = 3.86 kg/s, v₁ = 757 m/s,

    Force = 103 kg/s (757 - 296) + (3.86 kg/s * 757 m/s) = 47483 + 2922.02 = 50405.02 N
