A 50.51g sample of a compound made from phosphorus and chlorine is decomposed. Analysis of the products showed that 11.39 g of phosphorus atoms were produced. Answer using three significant figures.

    The amount of chlorine in the sample will be calculated by subtracting the mass of phosphorus from the total mass of the compound.

    mass of chlorine = (50.51 g) - (11.39 g)

    = 39.12 g

    The mass percent of phosphorus in the sample is,

    % phosphorus = (11.39 g / 50.51g) x 100% = 22.55%

    and that chlorine is,

    % chlorine = (39.12 g/50.51 g) x 100% = 77.45%
