Intermolecular forces and kinetic energy both play a role in the phase a substance is in at a particular temperature and pressure. For example, as substances move from the liquid to the gaseous phase, particles must have enough kinetic energy to overcome the intermolecular forces holding them near each other in the liquid. Arrange the following conditions according to the kinetic energy of the system. Rank from highest kinetic energy to lowest kinetic energy.

1. Neon at 5 K and 0 atm

2. Neon at 55 K and 10 atm

3. Neon at 65 K and 15 atm

4. Neon at 25 K and 5 atm

    Explanation:

    In gases, kinetic energy is higher the higher the temperature is. This is because the molecules have more available energy under those conditions. Generally there's also an increase in kinetic energy if there's an increase in pressure - assuming there's no phase changes ie. the gas condenses into a liquid-.
