Sodium is a more electropositive metal which means that it "hates" electrons more than magnesium therefore it needs less energy to chuck electrons than magnesium does ... Those are the main factors that explain why sodium metal is more reactive than magnesium metal

Explanation: Sodium is more electropositive And has one valence electron while magnesium has two. Therefore it needs less energy than magnesium therefore reacts faster
