An open-end manometer containing mercury was connected to a vessel holding a gas at a pressure of 767 torr. The atmospheric pressure was 724 torr. What is the difference in the heights of the mercury, expressed in cm?

    Explanation:

    P = Patm + δHg*g*h

    ∴ P = 767 torr

    ∴ Patm = 724 torr

    ∴ δ Hg = 13534 Kg/m³

    ∴ g = 9.8 m/s²

    ⇒ h = (767 torr - 724 torr) / ((13534 Kg/m³) (9.8 m/s²))

    ⇒ h = 43 torr / 132633.2 Kg/m²s² = 5732.86 Pa / 132633.2 Kg/m²s²

    ∴ Pa ≡ Kg/ms²

    ⇒ h = 0.0432 m = 4.32 cm
