A toy balloon filled with air has an internal pressure of 126.625 kPa and a volume of 2500 mL. If I take the balloon to the bottom of the ocean where the pressure is 95 atmospheres, what will the new volume of the balloon be in mL? How many moles of gas does the balloon hold? (Assume T=285K)

    It is given by Boyle's law that, in gases pressure and volume are in inverse relationship, when the temperature remains constant.

    P₁V₁ = P₂V₂

    Now we have to find the volume, V₂ as,

    V₂ = P₁V₁ / P2

    P₁ = 126.625 kPa = 1.25 atm

    Plugin the given values as,

    V₂ = 1.25 atm * 2500 ml / 95 atm = 32.9 ml

    Now we have to find the number of moles for the new volume and pressure and temperatue is 285 K.

    PV = nRT

    n = PV/RT

    = 95 atm * 0.0329 L / 0.08206 L atm mol⁻¹ K⁻¹*285 K

    = 0.134 moles.
