Indicate whether each of the following four solutions is acidic (a), basic (b), or neutral (n). Your answer should be a four letter "word" consisting of the letters a, b and n, with no commas or spaces. For example, the "word" aanb would be used to indicate that the first two solutions are acidic, the third neutral, and the fourth basic a solution of pH = 3 a solution of pOH = 9 a solution in which [OH1-] = 10-4M a solution in which [OH1-] = 10-8M Answer:

    Explanation:

    To know if a solution is acidic, neutral or basic we have to consider the pH.

    If pH <7, the solution is acidic. if the solution is neutral. If pH> 7, the solution is basic.

    A solution of pH = 3

    Since pH < 7, the solution is acidic.

    A solution of pOH = 9

    We can calculate the pH using the following expression.

    pH + pOH = 14

    pH = 14 - pOH = 14 - 9 = 5

    Since pH < 7, the solution is acidic.

    A solution in which [OH¹⁻] = 10⁻⁴M

    First, we calculate the pOH and then the pH.

    pOH = - log [OH¹⁻] = - log 10⁻⁴ = 4

    pH = 14 - pOH = 14 - 4 = 10

    Since pH > 7, the solution is basic.

    A solution in which [OH¹⁻] = 10⁻⁸M

    First, we calculate the pOH and then the pH.

    pOH = - log [OH¹⁻] = - log 10⁻⁸ = 8

    pH = 14 - pOH = 14 - 8 = 6

    Since pH < 7, the solution is acidic.
