In this case, energy is conserved by the individual sledding downhill because the total amount of the initial potential energy and kinetic energy will be the exact amount of energy at the end. Potential energy is energy that is preserved whereas kinetic energy is energy which something possesses when it starts moving.

    Explanation:

This can be explained simply as follows:

At the top of the mountain, the potential energy of the person is at its maximum while the kinetic energy is at the minimum level. As the person sleds downhill, he begins to lose his potential energy slowly. This will cause his kinetic energy to increase as it is always the case of energy conservation. When he reaches the top of the mountain, his potential energy will have dropped significantly while his kinetic energy will be at its maximum level.
