In a steam power plant, energy is added by heat transfer at a rate of 2100 kW at 680◦C at the boiler, removed at a rate of 1240 kW at 35◦C at the condenser, and the pump power is 75 kW. Determine: a. thermal efficiency of power plant b. maximum possible turbine power [kW] (assume same energy transfers at boiler and pump)

    Answer: a. 94.86%

    b. 2067.06 kW

    Explanation: a. Tc = 35 C

    Th = 680 C

    Thermal Efficiency (η) = 1 - Tc/Th

    = 1 - 35/680

    = 0.9486

    Hence Thermal Efficiency of Plant = 94.86%

    b. Qh = 2100 kW

    Wp = 75 kW

    η = (Wt - Wp) / Qh

    Wt = (η * Qh) + Wp = (0.9486 * 2100) + 75 = 2067.06 kW
