COP or Coefficient of performance of a heat pump is used to define how efficient a heat pump is. It is an expression that measures the efficiency or effectiveness of the heat pump.
A heat pump is device that uses external work to extract heat from a colder reservoir and transfer it to the higher reservoir. Mathematically, the coefficient of performance of a heat pump can be expressed as,
COP = heat delivered / work done on the heat pump
COP is a dimensionless quantity.
