In Kafka's The Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa both loves and feels enraged toward his family. On one hand, Gregor loves his family and feels that it is his responsibility to care for and support his family. On the other hand, Gregor feels that his sense of responsibility toward his family has lead to him making personal sacrifices that have served to limit his own life and freedom. He comes, over the course of the story, to feel that his family is a burden upon him, especially because they do not provide him with the same measure of support and respect that he affords them.
