There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County. But it was a time for vague optimism for some of the people: Maycomb had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself. (Lee 5-6) What context does the excerpt above create, and why does that context matter in the novel?

This part of the novel shows Lee's description of the setting Maycomb County. It highlights the main problem that readers should be analyzing. The problem being that everyone in the area have cruel attitudes or prejudice and discrimination towards one another. Lee implies the setting is an ordinary community but in truth it has flaws that interest readers.
