When they first meet, Mephistophilis appears in his demonic form - Faustus is not afraid of him, but rather tells him he is too ugly and wishes him to change into some other form (that of an old Franciscan friar). He is trying to impose his dominance over the devil, however, in the end he will lose his soul nevertheless.
