The whole reason for telling the story about his mother is because he figures the boy is making a mistake by running away from his mother. This does not make it ironic since Mr. Shiflet is doing this on purpose. What is ironic is that he is talking about how he mistreated his mother by leaving her even though she was a gift from heaven. His wife is a sweet, innocent girl who he just left at a diner. One would think he'd have learned his lesson about leaving people ...
