She wanted to have the strength in her that her mother had. She says that the materialistic things and possessions of her mother can not give her the strength that her internal attributes could.

The third line in the poem told that this strength in the mother came from the place where she had come from. She had come from New England and that was the place which gave her the courage that she had. Her character was chiseled from her environment like a rock from the quarry.
