Sarah changed the words of the pig lullaby so that they rhymed, and every night she sang it to little Stanley.

"If only, if only," the woodpecker sighs,

"The bark on the tree was as soft as the skies."

While the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely,

Crying to the moo--oo--oon,

"if only, if only."

Why is this flashback important?

It tells why Stanley's family has always had such bad luck.

It explains why Stanley is lonely and has few friends at home.

It gives the reader a better understanding of the lullaby Stanley's father sings.

It indicates that both Sarah and Stanley are good writers.
