In the story "On the Gull's Road", the narrator meets Mrs. Ebbling in a boat bound for Italy.

The narrator is immediately cautivated by Mrs. Ebbling's beauty. But Mrs. Ebbling appears to have no interest in anything or anyone, except for the sea. Mr. Ebbling "seemed always to have been swept along by ocean streams".

Slowly, the narrator gets closer to Mrs. Ebbling. And along the journey, they become friends, and then fall in love with each other while they admire the shoreline they are passing.
