As a kid from the underprivileged, lower class, a child of a drunkard, Huck has been used to hard living, even when he has $6,000 that he had earned in his previous adventures together with Tom Sawyer. His survival instinct is one reason of his amazing capability to adapt; without this versatility, he would have a good chance to end up like his father. However, he manages to evade this kind of destiny and life, and fight his way out of it. He is courageous and doesn't hesitate to undertake all kinds of risky ventures. To break free of his father's grip, he fakes his death and escapes. Later on, he dressed up as a girl. Through the course of the novel, he is undergoing a process of personal maturation, as he formulates his notions of what is right and what is not. So, he sees absolutely no problem in hanging out with Jim, the escaped slave. He even covers for him. So, when he does the right thing, he is persistent. When he tries to survive, he adapts to any given situation.
