Why is the Amazon rainforest called "the lungs of the planet"?

    The Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world which mean that it creates tons of oxygen. (Tons is not used to measure oxygen by the way it is just a hyperbole.)

    The Amazon rainforest functions as a giant air machine that absorbs a large amount of carbon dioxide and produces oxygen, that is why it is called "the lungs of the Earth"
