Why are dead or decaying organisms still considered important parts of an ecosystem?

    Because they are consumed by other animals to obtain their energy

    The organic matter produced from decaying organisms enriches soil with nutrients which plants uptake for their own growth. These plants can then provide food, protection and shelter for other animals within the food chain.
