If one ventured outside the cities of europe, was the quality of life better in the countryside?

If one ventured outside the cities of Europe the quality of life maybe better in the countryside in terms of cleaner surroundings and fresher air. It seems like a total rehabilitation. However, economy and development-wise, the countryside is way under the urban area, that opportunities are not that many.
