Why is northern europe mainly lutheran, while southern europe is mainly roman catholic?

    The southern European regions were under Catholic rule much longer so the Catholic church had a much higher influence on those states than it did on northern countries. This had been like this since the Roman empire became fully and officially a Christian empire. Northerners were more willing to support Lutheran churches and Luther since they disliked practices of the Catholic church.
