United States wanted to remain neutral in the conflict in Europe because it didn't want to get caught in with what the other countries (allies) were experiencing. It also wanted to remain "impartial."

    Explanation:

When World War I erupted in Europe in 1914, the current President (Woodrow Wilson) stated that the country would follow "strict neutrality" because it didn't want to get caught in with what the other countries were experiencing. The President wanted the country to remain "impartial" and not going against any sides. However, the country couldn't remain neutral when Germany tried to quarantine the isles in Britain. Since Britain was one America's trading partners, it affected the country so much. This was followed by the attacks on the American ships by the Germans when it tried to enter Britain. The tension between the two countries rose.
