The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) was an international organization created on September 8, 1954 by the Manila pact, with the aim of ensuring the economic development and political stability of the region, including collective defense. With the establishment of its headquarters in Bangkok, Thailand (February 1955) its main objective was to block possible communist advances in Southeast Asia. In addition, SEATO planned to be an Asian version of NATO, in which the military forces of each of its members would be coordinated to jointly defend each of the signatory countries. SEATO used parts of the armed forces of each member country for joint annual military maneuvers.
