    Explanation:

    The city of New Orleans or Nouvelle Orléans was named after the French Regent, Duke Phillipe II after the decision to found the city was taken in Paris in 1717. The location to be later known as New Orleans was chosen by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyen de Bienville, responsible for the founding of the city. New Orleans was thus chosen to serve as a port of deposit for future trading and naval activities on the Mississippi River valley.

    Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville et d'Ardillières and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville were brothers. Iberville being almost 20 years older. Both French-Canadians they served under the French Military as sailors and soldiers fighting to conquer territories for France in the seventeenth century.

    A French - Canadian Louis Jolliet an explorer and trader as well as Jacques Marquette a Frenchman out in Catholic missionary work were known to be the first two Frenchmen to explore the Mississippi River.

    The French territory of Louisiana was claimed by René - Robert, Sieur de La Salle for France in 1682. He also named the territory of Louisiana after Louis XIV, King of France
