During colonial times, where did most Americans work? And if they needed an item, what did they do?

    Colonial and post-indepence America until the second half of the 19th century was an agrarian society. It's estimated that in the 1790s, 90 percent of the American population lived in the countryside. They were mainly farmers. If they needed an item they couldn't produce, they usually imported it from Britain or from other European countries.
