    José Martí was a talented Cuban writer and poet born in Havana in 1853. He was also a political activist and spent much of his life abroad in exile for his radical views on liberating Cuba from Spanish rule. He participated in the Ten Years' War again Spain by using his writing skills to advance the cause. In 1869 Martí founded La Patria Libre, where he published several poems that would have a profound influence on Latin American notions of political independence. One such poem was called "Abdala," where Martí described an imaginary country called Nubia as being freed from colonial rule.
