Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924) was the founder of the Bolsevhik Party, together with Alexander Bogdanov. The Bolshevhiks reached power after the October Revolution and Lenin became the head of the government of Soviet Russia between 1917 and 1924 and of the subsequent Soviet Union between 1922 and 1924.

His ideology was based on Marxism, although the political principles he developed are nowadays known as Leninism. Under his ruling, Russia became a one-party communist state.
