Women in the 19th century had little opportunity. Men were seen as better than women, thus limiting their opportunities. During the 19th Century, women had very little independence from their husbands. They were not allowed to work and many didn't receive an education. Many women married young and their freedom taken by their husbands. Women were not to have their own opinion and only answer to their spouse. They were to stay at home and cook, clean and care for the children. Society ensured that little women as possible had access to mainstream jobs. Parents normally decided to spend their money on the sons education while the daughters stayed at home and learnt how to make a good house wife with their mothers.
