In a time full of racism, injustices and no or limited rights for African Americans and other minorities, the growth, influence, and tactics of civil rights groups, including Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" and "I Have a Dream" Speech, and the work of Cesar Chavez represented the opportunity for millions of people in America to "stand tall" and fight for their civil rights in a more organized way.

White Americans, federal officials, and extremist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan in the southern states heavily opposed to desegregation.

Through the ideas and ideals followed by civil rights leaders such as the above-mentioned, African Americans and other minority groups found the kind of leadership that knew how to articulate protest in the right direction. Furthermore, these were smart and charismatic leaders that used nonviolent demonstrations and protests, something that gained the support of many people in the US, including white people.
