    The first Latin American Nobel Prize winner was Gabriela Mistral, and she was born on 7 April 1889 in Vicuña, Chile. She was a poet who had gained fame with her famous Sonnets of Death for which she was awarded Juegos Florales award in 1914. She was awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1945.
