Which technological improvement did the railroad bring?

To keep the trains run on time, switching and communications systems were innovated. Tunnels, bridges, Traffic lights and several miles of electrified tracks were laid. Also diesel locomotives were introduced which enabled to transport more freight with less number of workers.
