1. Slavery (The south's way of life depends on the use of slave labor to keep their plaintations up and running, while the North didnt need slave labor to run the factories and the new industrial life they were living in. The release of Uncle Tom's Cabin showed the North the horrible conditions slaves lived in, and resent ment grew. This particular cause can be classified as "Slavery" or "Sectionalism"
2. Economics (The south weren't very rich, they lived on farms and large plantations and relied on slave labor for everything. The North, however, was richer because they had factories. All the cotton picked in the south would be sent to the factories in the North to make shirts and blankets and such. This caused the South to resent the north because they felt the north was taking all their money.)
3. Secession of the Southern States (When South Carolina and the other 11 states seceeded from the Union, Abraham Lincoln first tried to convince the south to rejoin the Union, that he would allow the south t live their life the way they always had-with slaves. When that tactic failed, the Civil War began, not to free the slaves. The war was initiated to preserve the Union and keep the Union whole. The war later evolved into a war to free the slaves in 1863.)
