In your own words, why did George Washington oppose political parties?

George Washington did not want to have political parties in the United States because he knew there would be a sharp divide between politicians in America over political ideas had how the country should be run. At the time when Washington was around there was already a divide happening between the federalists, who wanted a strong central government, and the anti-federalists who wanted to give more power to the states. As for Washington, he had no affiliation to a political party because he believed no matter what a president thought on an issue, if a bill needed to be passed and he deemed it to be Constitutional, he would not veto it. In fact, in his eight years a chief executive, he only vetoed two bills he thought were not Constitutional. Presidents and politicians in general today should follow Washington's lead and base laws off of their Constitutionality instead of what they and their political party believe in.
