Why might the english take the best farmland when they colonized ireland?

    They took the best farmland because, when they first colonized Ireland, they would be able to reap the rewards from having tenants work on this land. This gave the English settlers the ability to own and lord over the new land, while still earning rent monies that were used in the English economy, a double-win.
