The Monroe Doctrine states that the intervention of foreign entities in the politics of the United States is potentially a hostile act against the United States. If you lived in a country outside of the United States then, no matter how small, poor, or underprivileged the country, you could look to the Monroe Doctrine to see that your country holds a certain degree of power and influence over one of the most powerful countries in the world.
