Is the relationship between the variables in the table a direct variation, an inverse variation, both, or neither? If it is a direct or inverse variation, write a function to model it.

x 2 5 20 40

y 40 20 5 2

a.) Neither

b.) Inverse Variation; y = 20/x

c.) Direct Variation; y = 20x

d.) Direct variation; y = x+15

The table shows that as x increases, y decreases. This appears to be an inverse variation. However, the given inverse vaariation in b) does not fit, since if y = 20/x, x = 2 should give y = 10. Also, x = 5 should give y = 4. Therefore, none of these choices is the right answer, so this is A. In an inverse relation, the product of x & y should be a constant, but that is not true in this case.
