    The problem given can be solve using one variable. so let x be the total vote

    x = x (5/8) + 5/9 (x - x (5/8)) + 48

    so solve for x

    x - x (5/8) - 5/9 (x - x (5/8)) = 48

    x - x (5/8) - x (5/9) + x (25/72) = 48

    x (1/6) = 48

    x = 48*6

    x = 288

    blue votes = 288 (5/8) = 180

    red votes = 5/9 (288 - 180) = 60

    students riverside = 288 + 25 = 313
