    Lower number = x

    Higher number = x + 2 (even numbers are two apart)

    8 (x+2) = 5x + 40 I added 40 to the 5x to make them equal or I could have

    8x + 16 = 5x = 40 subtracted 40 from the left side of the equation

    Above I have used the distributive laws on 8 (x+2)

    Next I will subtract 16 from both sides

    8x = 5x + 24 Now I will subtract 5x from both sides

    3x = 24 Finally I will divide both sides by 3

    x=8 and x + 2 = 10 so the second number is 10

    Let's check: 8 x 10 = 80 and that is 40 more than 8 x 5 which is 40. So our numbers work.
