Distance hiked on the way out is 3 + 3/4 miles, or 3 3/4 miles, or 15/4 miles.

Distance hiked part way back is 2 + 1/4 miles, or 2 1/4 miles, or 9/4 miles.

How much further will she have to walk to return to her original starting place?

    This is 15/4 - 9/4, or 6/4, or 3/2, or 1 1/2 (miles).

Another way in which you could do this problem: 3-2 = 1 (mile)

    (3/4) - (1/4) (mile)

    Answer: 1 mile + (1/2) mile

    = 1 1/2 miles further.
