she spent studying 5 3/10 hours

    Step-by-step explanation:

We know that Sam spent 3 and a half hours studying on Monday, and that he spent 1 hour and 4 fifths studying on Tuesday.

to know the total number of hours we simply have to add these 2 amounts

    3 1/2 + 1 4/5 =

In order to make the sum we have to find a common denominator between the 2 fractions

to know the common denominator we are going to multiply both denominators

    2 * 5 = 10

10 is the common denominator between 2 and 5 that we are going to use, now we only have to express those fractions with a denominator of 10

    1 / 2 = (1 * 5) / (2 * 5) = 5 / 10

    4 / 5 = (4 * 2) / (5 * 2) = 8 / 10

now we replace our fractions with these equivalent fractions

    3 1/2 + 1 4/5 =

    3 5/10 + 1 8/10 = 4 13/10 = 5 3/10

she spent studying 5 3/10 hours
