On the left side of the equation, our - 3 and + 3 cancel out and we're left with a. On the right side of the equation, - 8 + 3 simplifies to - 5 so a = - 5.
To check our answer, we can substitute - 5 back in for a in the original equation and we get (-5) - 3 = - 8. (-5) - 3 can be thought of as (-5) + (-3) and you can see that this is a true statement so our answer checks.
