    Question:

A student randomly selects one marble from the group of marbles shown below and then tosses a balanced coin.

    3 red marbles

    4 green marbles

    2 blue marbles

    A. What is the probability that the student will select a green marble and then toss a heads? Show all your work.

    B. Use your answer in A to determine the likelihood that the student will select a green marble and then toss a heads. Explain your reasoning in complete sentences.

    Answer:

    P (green and heads) = 2/9 = 0.22

    Step-by-step explanation:

A.) What is the probability that the student will select a green marble and then toss a heads? Show all your work.

Probability of selecting a green marble = no. of green marbles/total no. of marbles

no. of green marbles = 4

    total no. of marbles = 3 + 4 + 2 = 9

    P (green) = 4/9

Probability of tossing heads = no. of interest outcomes/total no. of outcomes

no. of interest outcomes = 1 (heads)

total no. of outcomes = 2 (heads, tails)

    P (heads) = 1/2

    P (green and heads) = P (green) * P (heads)

    P (green and heads) = 4/9*1/2

    P (green and heads) = 2/9 = 0.22

    B. Use your answer in A to determine the likelihood that the student will select a green marble and then toss a heads. Explain your reasoning in complete sentences.

In this problem we want to know the probability of 2 different events happening at the same time or one after another which are not depended on each other.

Whether you are selecting a green marble or a red one this will not going to effect the probability of getting a head or tail. In such a case, we multiply the probabilities of these 2 events to get the combined probability.
