    Substitute y

    6x + 5 (2x - 14) = - 6

    use distributive property

    6x + 10x - 70 = - 6

    add terms together

    16x = 64

    isolate x

    16x/16 = 64/16

    x = 4

    to find value of y, use your x value in the second equation

    y = 2 (4) - 14

    y = - 6

    Verify you are correct

    6 (4) + 5 (-6) = - 6
