Are these two lines parallel

y + 8 = - 6x

-2x + y = 5

    Parallel lines have the same gradient

    rearrange the equation so they will be in the form y = mx + c, where m is the gradient

    y = - 6x - 8

    y = 2x + 5

    as you can see, since they do not have the same gradient, they are not parallel lines
