    Then x+y=52 ... (1)

    and 2x + 4y = 148 ... (2)

    multiplying equation (1) by 2

    we get

    2x + 2y = 104 ... (3)

    subtracting equation (3) from equation (2)

    2y=44

    y=22

    that is x=52-22=30

    there are 30 emus and 22 wombats

    Emu have 2 feet and 1 head

    wombat has 4 feet and 1 head

    E = emu

    W = Wombat

    E + W = 52

    2E + 4W = 148

    E = 52-W

    2 (52-W) + 4W = 148

    104-2W + 4W = 148

    104 + 2W = 148

    2W = 44

    W = 44/2 = 22

    E = 52-22 = 30

    there are 30 Emus
