It costs a publishing company $0.55 to print one copy of a certain novel. This company paid $725,000 for the rights to the novel. If they can sell a copy of the novel for $6.75, how many copies of the novel must they sell to break even, to the nearest hundred?

    So to solve this, it would be best to make an inequality and solve it real quickly

    c = number of copies of the book

    6.75c > / = 725000 + 0.55c

    to write this inequality you want to include all of your costs on one side and all of your profits on the other.

    the company paid 725k for the rights to the novel, and that's a number that never changes in this problem. it costs them 0.55 per novel in printing. these are both costs, so they'll add on one side.

    then for your profits, you're making 6.75 per novel. this profit must be greater than or equal to your costs.

    solve the inequality for C:

    6.20c > / = 725000

    divide both sides by 6.20

    and your answer is the number of copies must be greater than or equal to 116,935.48
